Cheers erupted outside of Vermont federal court after a judge ruled that Tufts University grad student Rumeysa Ozturk must be released from immigration custody on bail.

Rümeysa Öztürk's attorneys said she was targeted for writing a pro-Palestinian essay in the student newspaper, raising First Amendment concerns.

A district court judge in Vermont had earlier ordered that the 30-year-old doctoral student be brought to the state for hearings to determine whether she was illegally detained. Ozturk’s lawyers say her detention violates her constitutional rights, including free speech and due process.
