Mark Carney has become the new Prime Minister of Canada, which—according to BBC News—may significantly influence relations with the U.S., potentially preventing an escalation of tariffs that could lead to a trade war.

With the vote count incomplete, it was unclear whether Mr. Carney’s Liberal Party would secure a majority in Parliament. Pierre Poilievre, the opposition leader, lost his seat.

Despite his wealth of government experience, Carney is a newcomer to Canadian electoral politics, joining Parliament just this year.
