BBC Sport Africa sits down with Benni McCarthy to hear why he thinks he can turn Kenya into a team ready to compete on football’s global stage.

Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has been unveiled as the new head coach of Kenya, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced.

Kenya named former South Africa international Benni McCarthy as coach on Monday, some three weeks before they resume their World Cup qualification campaign. He will debut later this month with an away match against The Gambia followed by a home clash with Gabon.

Benni McCarthy has said Kenya can "surprise a lot of people" by qualifying for the 2026 World Cup after the being appointed as the country's new head coach. The South African has signed a two-year deal that will see him lead the Harambee Stars up to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations - a tournament which will be held on home soil in East Africa,

Benni McCarthy has been appointed as the new head coach of the Kenya national team. McCarthy’s last role in football was as part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching team at Manchester United but he left the club last summer as he wanted to return to management.
