Erin rapidly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane over the Atlantic Ocean Saturday before weakening slightly to a Category 4 status, the National Hurricane Center said.

Erin is expected to continue to fluctuate in intensity as it undergoes an eyewall replacement cycle.

“The adverse weather has caused multiple interruptions across the island,” Luma Energy, a power company in Puerto Rico, said on X.

Erin, the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, has been downgraded to Category 3, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said early on Sunday, as the storm's wind speed eased slightly.

The storm was expected to double or even triple in size in the coming days.
