Amid tight security, members of a judicial commission on Sunday visited the Shahi Jama Masjid here and other areas that witnessed violence over a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era mosque. Panel head retired Allahabad High Court judge Devendra Kumar Arora and retired IPS officer Arvind Kumar Jain were the two members of the three-member commission who visited the areas that witnessed violence on November 24.

Under tight security, a three-member judicial inquiry commission headed by a retired high court judge visited Sambhal and inspected the area where violence occurred over the survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid.

The judicial commission appointed to probe the violence that erupted in Sambhal on November 24 visited the town on Sunday and began their probe. The district administration heightened security in the violence-hit area in view of the commission’s visit.

A Samajwadi Party delegation heading to violence-hit Sambhal were detained after the district administration prohibited the entry of outsiders there till December 10, drawing criticism from its chief Akhilesh Yadav.

On his visit to Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh Assembly LoP and Samajwadi party leader Mata Prasad Pandey asserted that Sambhal DM asked him not to visit there. On Saturday, Pandey criticised the administration for deploying police outside his residence without notice.
