Manchester City are set to sign attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon in a €40 million package deal. The French international is said to have flown to Manchester shortly after a deal was agreed on Monday morning to complete his medical and media duties before signing ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline before the FIFA Club World Cup.

Pep Guardiola played traditional centre-backs Josko Gvardiol and Manuel Akanji in the left-back position in recent seasons.

In a sense, tomorrow's deadline is a bit misleading. That is just to be involved in the start of the Club World Cup. There is an opportunity to add to squads in mid-tournament from 27 June to 3 July that would make players available for the knockout rounds. City could also ignore the Club World Cup altogether and sign Cherki at a later date.
