Gavin Newson is suing Donald Trump over his sweeping tariffs, claiming they are “unlawful.” The California governor said the levies on foreign trading partners are “wreaking havoc” on the Golden State,

“Trump’s tariffs are the single largest tax increase in our lifetime, and they’re jamming Californians with higher prices on groceries, medicine and cars,” said Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, D-Hollister, in a statement. “We’re protecting our residents — and all American families — from unlawful economic chaos.”

The Trump administration wants to shift the venue for California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit against its tariff policies from a federal court in San Francisco to one in New York. Justice Department attorneys on Thursday argued that the dispute should be adjudicated in the US Court of International Trade in New York since it has sole jurisdiction over matters related to tariffs.
