The Detroit Red Wings had quite a few reasons to draft Carter Bear, but his relentless nature was at the top of the list.

The Wings selected left wing Carter Bear Friday with the 13th pick in the first round of the NHL Draft. Bear (6-foot, 180 pounds), who suffered a partially torn Achilles tendon that ended his season in March, scored 40 goals in 56 games for Everett (WHL). Bear said expects to be ready for training camp.

Any time the 18-year-old is on the ice, he's extremely engaged and looking to get involved in play. Whatever it takes—throwing a hit, winning a battle, driving through opponents to get to the net—you can bet he's willing to do it. That level of engagement is so valuable; it's the kind of thing that could make or break a game.
