The horrifying 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday morning was felt across most of South-East Asia. The earthquake originated northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey ( USGS ).
It sent buildings in many areas toppling to the ground, buckled roads, caused bridges to collapse and burst a dam.
Myanmar’s economy is in ruins, its education and health systems are a mess and the poverty rate has doubled since the junta’s takeover. About 20 million people — more than a third of the population — were already projected to need some form of humanitarian assistance this year.
