The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased to a seven-month high last week, pointing to softening labor market conditions amid mounting economic headwinds from tariffs.

While filings remain at historic lows, the uptick in unemployment claims from last week could point to a slowing labor market ahead of jobs report.

Weekly jobless claims in the U.S. increased more than expected in May to a seasonally adjusted 240,000 for the week ended May 24, according to the Labor Department.
